The lighting in this village is Parish maintained. Back in 2005 there was a public consultation on what new lighting could be fitted as the old tungsten timeswitch controlled lighting "was increasingly difficult to maintain". One column was fitted with a modern "repro" swan neck and "heritage" lantern running metal halide as an example of possible replacements...
A return visit in 2008, turned out to have a unexpected surprise ..

Portsmouth's streetlights are being replaced under a PFI (that also covers road repairs) which started in 2004. By 2009 the majority of the lighting will be replaced. It is expected that there will be just a few hundred sox streetlights that will not be replaced. Everything else will be son with practically all mercury except in heritage areas also being replaced.
The standard PFI replacement fit is the Philips Iridium in all 3 sizes, SGS252/253/254 running son either 50/70/100/150 or 250w. Deep bowl types are used in residential areas, shallow bowl and flat glass on main roads.
Maletite columns are used, height is 6 or 7m in residential areas, 8/10/12m on main roads.
This collection shows the varied relics that existed before replacement.

 | 20th Jul 2008 | Portchester, Hampshire (23 images)
Much of the lighting will soon be replaced as part of the Hampshire PFI, but many relics still exist. Residential lighting in Portchester was converted from time switch controlled tungstun to photocell MI50 35w sox in the early 1980s, so none of the original lanterns fitted to the vintage columns remain.

 | 3rd Sep 2008 | Havant Borough, Hampshire (39 images)
This borough located north of Portsmouth still contains some unique installations which are not found in neighbouring areas. However they are on borrowed time as this area will be covered by a PFI starting in 2009.

 | 9th Oct 2008 | Gosport, Hampshire (22 images)
Gosport Borough is on the opposite side of the harbour to Portsmouth and south of Fareham. The lighting in this borough has its own unique style - some of it common to the neighbouring areas but also containing lighting not found in adjacent areas. Original colour scheme for columns was dark grey base and lighter grey for the column tube. Most replacements are now however in "Hampshire light green."
As part of Hampshire, this borough will have its lighting replaced as part of the forthcoming PFI.

 | 20th Jul 2008 | Fareham, Hampshire (54 images)
Practically all of Fareham's lighting will be replaced by the Hampshire PFI. Some replacement schemes are taking place before the PFI. The vast majority of the residential lighting is currently 35w sox, varying in age from the modern to some columns which are 50 years old. The oldest stock seems to being replaced pre PFI. Casual replacements for failed lanterns are the Urbis ZXU1. Replacement sox lanterns have not been fitted for at least 5 years.

A recent trip to California turned up a few surprises and proved that not all streetlighting is "Cobra Heads". Note: some of the pictures were taken on a mobile phone and others from a moving vehicle so apologies for the quality of some of them.

 | 1st Aug 2008 | Aldershot, Hampshire (8 images)
On the boundary between Aldershot and Farnborough Hants exist many forgotton relics. This is also a surviving outpost of sox lighting. Being part of Hampshire, these examples are all living on borrowed time and will be replaced as part of the PFI which starts in 2009.
