Portsmouth's streetlights are being replaced under a PFI (that also covers road repairs) which started in 2004. By 2009 the majority of the lighting will be replaced. It is expected that there will be just a few hundred sox streetlights that will not be replaced. Everything else will be son with practically all mercury except in heritage areas also being replaced.

The standard PFI replacement fit is the Philips Iridium in all 3 sizes, SGS252/253/254 running son either 50/70/100/150 or 250w. Deep bowl types are used in residential areas, shallow bowl and flat glass on main roads.

Maletite columns are used, height is 6 or 7m in residential areas, 8/10/12m on main roads.

This collection shows the varied relics that existed before replacement.

Eleco HW509 (90w sox) on Stewarts & Lloyd 25ft (8m) column. This was the standard main road fit in Portsmouth and much of South Hampshire during the 1950s and early 1960's. Almost now totally extinct in Portsmouth and fast disappearing elsewhere. A classic streetlighting installation. Works to replace this installation have started, July 2009. Update: Column removed early August 2009. See later in collection for its replacement.

 Eleco HW846 Golden Ray Mk7 gear in head (35w sox) on Portsmouth Corporation cast iron column. This was the very last example of this lantern in Portsmouth. Removed October 2007 and unfortunately I was unable to save it.

What a 1950's classic! Twin arm Stewarts & Lloyds 25ft/8m column with twin Eleco HW509s (90w sox). Totally original but sadly removed July 08. Fortunately I was able to save some similar lanterns. The S&L twin arm column will be extinct in Portsmouth once these works are completed at the end of July.

Incrediably rare Revo Lucidor A, 90W SOX, the last one in Pompey, never common in the city. Supply disconnected 14/08/08. Lantern removed 19/08/08 and unfortunately scrapped.
