June 2009,spotted on the A38, south of Lichfield, is this twin fluorescent installation, manufacturer unknown. Condition of this pair is poor, it is not known if they are still in use. This pair are in better condition. October 2009, the right hand pair of lanterns are actually still working with one lantern running both tubes and the other a single tube. They are remarkeably effective.

North Baddesley, This 1960's relic - Phosco 152, 35w SOX still survives. Lantern is gear in head. Bowl shows the typical cloudyness of this type of lantern. Note position of tube relative to refractor panels. These are glued on rather than moulded into the bowl. The next pole along has a 2nd example. However note how bowl is clear and grooves on end less pronouced. I suspect this is a replacement pattern bowl. Note vertical grooves in end of bowl. A vintage cast iron column in Basingstoke! Revo column and bracket/control box but unfortunately fitted with Urbis ZX1, 70w SON. Could mercury lanterns have been fitted prior to the ZX1? Basingstoke, Philips MA90, 90w SOX with gear shoe on 8m column. Note lanterns in background are the gear in body types. Given the more weathered canopy on this example it is probably original to the column, and the background lanterns are newer casual replacements. Basingstoke, a string of 6 (although only 5 are pictured) Petit Jean 10m columns and GEC 9554s, 135W SOX, lanterns. All original and dating back to the 1970s. It is rare to find such a sight now without casual replacements of the columns or lanterns. In the background a 7th column has been retrofitted with Urbis ZX3s running 150W SON. Close up, GEC 9554 135W SOX. One lantern has its bowl tie wrapped shut and the galvanising is starting to wear thin on the bracket allowing rust to take hold. Brockenhurst railway station - massive twin bracket installation of Thorn Alpha 3s running 100/150W SON-T lamps. Believed to be the last concrete columns in Basingstoke, these Concrete Utilities Highway X columns were once common on the distributor roads within the town. Concrete Utilities Highway X column fitted with Philips MA90 (90W SOX), gear in shoe version. Column dates form early to mid 1970s and the lantern may well be original to the column. Between J7 and J8 of the M27, the Highways Agency are trialling part night operation of the lighting with a view to reduce energy costs. The lighting is switched off from midnight to 5am. This is the view westbound towards J7 just before the switch off. Central reservation lighting is provide by Urbis quad optic ZX4s and the slip road lighting by ZX3, all running 250W SON lamps. After the switch off the only lighting remaining operational is the sign lighting on the overhead gantries. Looking east towards J8. Quad optic Urbis ZX4s on central reservation and ZX3s on slip road. All of the lighting shown including that on the sign to the left of the picture is extinguished midnight to 5am. Basingstoke. This example has a fluted column tube and is fitted with a newer gear in body Philips MA50, 135W SOX. It is unusual for a lantern lighting a pedestrian crossing not have been replaced with Urbis ZX3 running SON. Another view, with the forthcoming Hampshire and South Coast PFI, the days of these fine columns are numbered. On the A30 through Hartley Wintney is this GEC 5590 running 80w MBF. Usually the thin tube columns have a smaller diameter base than this. Fitted with GEC 5590, 80w MBF. 1950 Stewarts & Lloyd column fitted with GEC 5590, 80w MBF. This style of installation but with the similar GEC 5580 lantern was incrediably popular in Hampshire especially in the south of the county before mass conversions to Philips MI50 SOX lanterns in the early 1980s. Note excellent condition of column and fresh 1st column after removal. All 3 columns and lanterns were saved for collectors. A private installation of Thorn Gamma 5s running domestic CFL in Southampton. There are 3 such examples on site, but bizarrely they are fitted with GEC refractor rings. Original colour scheme for columns was dark grey base and lighter grey for the column tube. Most replacements are now however in "Hampshire light green." As part of Hampshire, this borough will have its lighting replaced as part of the forthcoming PFI. Revo/Relite/Simplex Solumbra, 35W SOX. 1950/60s Stewarts & Lloyd 15ft column with replacement Urbis ZXU1, 70W SON. This style of column was very common in South Hampshire but many are now being replaced. Another Solumbra. Concrete Utilities Avenue 2D column with day burning Phosco P152, 35W SOX. Concrete Utilities Avenue 2D with GEC 9531, 35W SOX. Note how clip end of bowl faces road, usually this faces the pavement. A 2nd example. These lanterns are not lit at night so may be out of use.

Back in 2005 there was a public consultation on what new lighting could be fitted as the old tungsten timeswitch controlled lighting "was increasingly difficult to maintain". One column was fitted with a modern "repro" swan neck and "heritage" lantern running metal halide as an example of possible replacements... A return visit in 2008, turned out to have a unexpected surprise .. Monday 15 September 2008: The lighting in this village is Parish maintained. One column was fitted with a modern "repro" swan neck and "heritage" lantern running metal halide as an example of possible replacements... A return visit in 2008, turned out to have a unexpected surprise ..

Column is completely enclosed by hedge but new swan neck and refurbished lantern has been fitted with a domestic CFL. Control is believed to be via either refurbished or new timeswitches. Column has been repainted with new swan neck probably a refurbished period original but of different design to the previous example. New swan neck probably a refurbished period original but with new scroll work. This was the column that was fitted with a modern heritage lantern running metal halide. Fortunately it now is fitted with something more appropriate. New bracket (but with no scroll work) and replacement lantern fitted to column, but this has not been repainted. It looks like the CFL has fallen out of lampholder into the bottom of the bowl. Completely new wall installation.

Same columns over 50 years ago. Nearest column has been removed, but 2nd is the same column fitted with a ZX3 in the previous picture. 3rd column still is there today still with its original lantern. It is not clear if this is lit everynight or is for Lantern has dimples in the end of the bowl similar to a Revo Dalek, but not on base as the Dalek does. Base also flat not curved as in Revo C13723 series. Refractor panel is offset towards front of bowl An incrediably rare survivor. Revo C13720/1T Thorn Gamma Bisque, lamp type unknown. Philips MI50 (35w sox) on vintage column and timeswitch bracket base but modern bracket top GEC9480 (35w sox) on Stewarts & Lloyds fluted column. This is probably a late 1950s column as it has the later single lock door rather than the earlier twin lock hinged type. Urbis ZX1 (70w son) mounted on modern replacement bracket and totally inappropriate for this column! By 2009 the majority of the lighting will be replaced. It is expected that there will be just a few hundred sox streetlights that will not be replaced. Everything else will be son with practically all mercury except in heritage areas also being replaced. The standard PFI replacement fit is the Philips Iridium in all 3 sizes, SGS252/253/254 running son either 50/70/100/150 or 250w. Deep bowl types are used in residential areas, shallow bowl and flat glass on main roads. Maletite columns are used, height is 6 or 7m in residential areas, 8/10/12m on main roads. This collection shows the varied relics that existed before replacement. Removed October 2007 and unfortunately I was unable to save it. These were the very last Alpha 1's in Pompey, never a very popular lantern in the city, Opticell held together with tape Another view, this example was on an Industrial Estate, column looks late 70s/early 80's, lantern removed 25/04/08. This was the last AEI Amber left in Portsmouth. A new development uses 8m ALC Nedal tapered aluminium columns with Philips Moderna lanterns to produce this stylish installation. Close up, Philips Moderna lantern. Stainton have updated their classic octagonal Bracket section is however the same including a double row of grub screws to secure to column. Urbis ZX3, deep bowl. This updated version is very stylish and aesthetically pleasing. As the column has a continuous taper there are no steps in its diameter. It is also slimmer than the octagonal section versions. Flat glass ZX3's would have looked even better. Single bracket version, Urbis ZX3. A row of single bracket versions. The A33 Reading relief road uses Thorn Lemnis lanterns for some of the lighting. These columns date to 1968 when the approaches to Fareham station were widened and the single brick arch railway bridge replaced by the current twin deck steel structure. Inverted V reflector in bottom of bowl can just be seen. Unfortunately this column was removed spring 2009. The others still remain. The entire station roundabout and the widened road either side of the new railway bridge were originally lit with Hyperions. This is one of 3 remaining original single bracket versions. Close up. Thorn Alpha 3, 150w SON, gear in shoe version. Installed new around 1977 and SON from new. These were the first high pressure sodium streetlights in Fareham. Of the around 30 original lanterns only around 10 now remain. A Trio of Threes. A stretch of 3 Thorn Alpha 3s mounted on 8m columns. Thorn Alpha 3, 150w SON Thorn Alpha 3, 150w SON, this is the only example mounted on a short bracket. Over 20 years since it was last painted, corrosion is now setting in. Relite Hyperion C, 135W SOX mounted on 10m Hex section Hockey Stick column. Very similar in appearance to a GEC 9554 but there are subtle differences. Canopy is different, most noticeable around spigot entry and the refractor panels extend more towards the back of the bowl on the Hyperion. The Hyperion also has a taper at the bottom of the front face of the bowl, where as the GEC has a constant slope front face. Close up, 1 of 3 remaining in Fareham. 10m Stewarts and Lloyd column with GEC 9554, 135W SOX lantern. The felt gasket is dangling from the lantern. The brackets are showing heavy corrosion as they have not been repainted for approximately 20 years. These columns would have been replaced as part of the Fareham Supertram scheme. However now that has been shelved, they linger on past their 40th birthdays. This short road originally had 3 such lanterns, this is the last survivor and the only such lantern in Fareham town itself although there are a few more in other villages within the Fareham Borough Council area. Relite Diadem (80w MBF) dating from mid 1970s, again very few now left having been replaced by MI26s and laterly ZX1s 10m Stewarts & Lloyd columns, Philips MA50s (135w sox), left gear in base, right gear in head. Swan neck is a later replacement and not original The sole surviving fluted concrete column in Portchester with a Philips MI50 (35w sox). This column type numbered a few hundred in Portchester but they have almost all gone, non are left in Portsmouth and but a handful survive in Fareham. Note SELC photocell, this is a replacement for the original thermal cell This footpath has recently had lighting installed using heavy duty Malletite fold down columns.The diameter of the column base is unusually large for this height of column, even allowing for the fold down mechanism. Strangely small stub side brackets have been used to mount the lanterns instead of post top mounting given the narrowness of the footpath. The lanterns are Urbis ZXU1 running 70w SON. The columns are unusually painted in navy blue, some of which are located in the adjacent school playing field, again due to the narrowness of the footpath. Close up of column base. This column is the exact same as that by the 2nd telephone pole in the previous picture. Nearest columns left and right are the same columns next to the 2nd telephone pole and 3rd column on left from the black and white photograph. Amazingly they still retain their original lanterns, Eleco HW509s almost 60 years on. Various other casual replacements of columns and lanterns - mostly with GEC 9454 and MA90s have taken place. 2 more additional columns do however retain their original Eleco HW509s. Same column 4 months later, now with Urbis Altra, 36W PL-L. This is the first time that I am aware of an Altra being used as a casual replacement on an existing column. Previous examples in the Fareham borough have been on new columns. Close up, Urbis Altra 36W PL-L, this is only the 2nd known example in Portchester. The other is on a replacement column. The 1st Sapphire 2, 150W SON used in Portchester as a casual replacement for a Philips MA50. The Sapphire appears to have taken over from the ZX3 as the main road SON lantern. Durrington, GEC 9480 35w SOX, on long bracket Stanton column Durrington, GEC 9532 35w SOX, top entry on double stayed pole bracket On the Hants/Wilts border are these pair of privately owned Thorn Gamma 5's running 125w MBF and mounted on Thorn aluminium columns. Lanterns are out of use. Both of these lanterns were removed on 15/02/09 and saved following permission from the owners. See later on in this album for a look at the replacement lanterns. Amesbury - GEC 9555, 135w SOX on twin bracket 10m column. Durrington - GEC 9555, 135w SOX. These were the standard early 1970s fit for A road roundabouts in Wiltshire mounted on 10m columns. Brackenheath TRNFL lanterns, 70w SON mounted on short outreach brackets replaced the privately owned Gamma 5s shown earlier in this album. Trowbridge - GEC8270/8370/8470 fluoresecnt lantern depending on the number of 5ft tubes it contains - 2,3 or 4. Privately owned and out of use, mounted on GEC hex section 25ft steel column. The site the lantern is on is awaiting redevelopment. Close up of lantern, extremely rare, there was a 2nd example on this site, sadly now lost. Trowbridge - Atlas Alpha 3's Column mounted ones run 150w SON, wall mounted example runs 250w MBF. Close up. Semington - This roundabout boasts a fine array of GEC 9555 135W SOX lanterns. However their condition is poor. Update 02/09/09 - all of these columns and lanterns were removed over July/August 2009. The columns are made by Abacus and date to the late 1960s. They reduce in diameter part way up the main tube. Later style casual replacement column, presumeably due to accident damage. Lantern was either reused or new example fitted. Long bracket example, possibly of Fabrikat origin. Bowl is taped shut after clips have failed on bowl. Many of these lanterns here were in a similar state. Twin bracket example. Another view. Sadly all now history following replacement summer 2009. Amesbury - A road improvement scheme has seen Urbis Sapphire 1's used. This is only the 2nd such sighting in The Sapphires are running SON and are mounted on a variety of column styles. This Sapphire is mounted on an 8m Abacus column. Note felled Thorn aluminium column with the remains of a slim bowl Beta 5 to the left. There was still a supply cable going into that column. Amesbury - privately owned tapered galvanised column with twin Philips Iridiums. Thorn Alpha 9, 90W SOX. Note centre example is deep bowled. A303/A360, the number of GEC 9555 lanterns here is now diminished due to casual replacements by Urbis ZX3's fitted by the Highways Agency. However 5 still remain. This example on a late 1960s Stewarts & Lloyd column and shares its bracket with a GEC 9554M. Both lanterns are 135W SOX. Close up. GEC 9480 (35w sox) mounted on wall bracket Thorn Alpha 5 (135w sox), late version with blank for NEMA cell on canopy. Privately owned and strangely mounted on 5m aluminium column Atlas Beta 3 (35w sox), mounted on a wall bracket possibly of Stewarts and Lloyd origin. This lantern was removed on the 10/11th February 2008 after dayburning since the previous summer. Fortunately thanks to the help of the staff of Wiltshire County Council, the lantern was saved and is now preserved in my collection. Extremely rare and probably the last one in the city. This lantern has now been replaced with a Philips SGS252 Iridium, 70W SON. Thorn Beta 79 (70w son). A well weathered example lighting a car park. GEC 9480 (35w sox). These lanterns are still common in Salisbury. Thorn Beta 5 (35w sox) mounted on sleeved concrete column probably a Stanton 7b. These are quite common in the area GEC 9480, 35W SOX with open bowl on 5m long outreach Stanton and Staveley column. Close up, bowl has been vandalised. Philips MA90, 90W SOX, gear in base on sleeved ElecoSlim 820 column. Column removed Summer 2009 and replaced with 8m tubular steel column with Philips SGS252 Iridium. Philips MA90, 90W SOX on sleeved Stanton column believed to be a 6B. Old photographs of Salisbury show these columns with the Stanton 6B with sleeve and Philips MA90, 90W SOX gear in base. This lantern was replaced October 2008 with a Philips SGS253 Iridium 100/150W SON. GEC 5590 on cast iron column, 80w MBF. One of 3 columns around the Catherdral. Underside view Underside view, looking at the holes in the canopy, this lantern may have had a hinge for an outer bowl. Philips Selenium on CU Phosco 8m column. These are the only know lanterns of this type in Salisbury - The Iridium is the usual main road lantern. Same column, Jan 09-service transfer now completed and sleeve and lantern removed from column. The Stantons were removed at the start of 2009, Philips SGS252 Iridiums 100W SON. Interestingly the lanterns are alternate deep and shallow bowl and this pattern is retained even when the columns alternate position from one side of the road to the other (more columns behind camera). Early Iridium with only a single grub screw. Canopy taped shut, canopy is missing securing clip at the front and the wire loop at the back of the lantern should be inside! - This is the spring stay that keeps the canopy open for servicing. Column has no door, column lifts up and over the base, in a similar way to the Abacus design of column. Believed to a be a Fabrikat fold down column fitted with an Iridium SGS252, 70W SON. Close up, note how concrete has been removed from bracket arm to allow lantern to be fitted. This may have been a result of the old lanterns being cut off the bracket if the grub screws were seized. Stanton and Staveley columns fitted with Philips SGS 252 Iridiums 70W SON. These replaced Thorn Beta 5s. Close up, Hyperion 135, 135W SOX CU Phosco 10m column with Relite/Simplex Hyperion 135, 135W SOX. Other columns are fitted with the similar looking GEC9554, 135W SOX. Privately owned and out of use Thorn Beta 7, lamp type is assumed to be mercury.
